Anecdotal evidence such as students’ posts on module forums and comments to tutors suggests that many students perceive a gap between expectations on Beginners (L192) and Level 1 (L112) French language modules. Moreover, a typical L112 cohort will include a significant number of students starting directly on Level 1 French without having studied L192 and who will not therefore have experienced the same prior learning programme. To facilitate the transition of the first group and prepare the second group, the L112 module team commissioned an experienced L192 and L112 associate lecturer (AL) to produce a package of materials to be made available on the L112 website when it went live to enrolled students in September 2018. This material, consisting of a PDF and three screencasts, was linguistically organised around present, past and future/conditional verb forms and provided opportunities to develop the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The material was located in the ‘Resources’ section of the L112 module website.

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the impact of the ‘Getting ready for L112’ materials with a view to sharing lessons learned from the experience and improving the content and presentation of similar projects in the future.
