It has been 20 years since the university published Supporting Open Learners: Reader, and the accompanying publication, Supporting Open Learners: Theoretical Reader for its tutors. These booklets offer practical guidance about many aspects of the role as a tutor. Two years later, the university published booklets on subjects, such as correspondence tuition (intranet only). Given the amount of substantial change that has taken place in the last 20 years, there is the need for a new up-to-date tutor resource that shares best practice, whilst also drawing on research carried out by the scholarship centres. Alluding to the title of Andrew Northedge’s student focussed The Good Study Guide, the aim of this scholarship project is to create a new resource entitled The Good Tutor Guide (TGTG). This project will aim to solicit opinions about tutor needs through university, faculty and school AL development events and to evaluate the first draft of The Good Tutor Guide, with a view to preparing a second edition. The project will also draw on the existing Guides for Associate Lecturer booklets (intranet only) which were last updated nearly ten years ago.

The new guide will be published under a creative commons licence and made available as an Open Educational Resource (OER) so it can be edited and adapted by other members of the university. It is envisaged that TGTG will be initially made available in a number of different formats: a PDF, an ePub for use on e-readers, and a physical booklet. All three formats will be evaluated.
